Floor Standing Speakers; A Consumer Buyers Guide

Floor Standing Speakers

Floor standing speakers are usually larger than other speakers, although not necessarily, and are built to stand on the floor with no other support. All speakers perform the same function, to produce sound, floor standing speakers, however, transmit a much larger range of frequencies, from deep bass to high treble. Floor standing speakers provide a greater level of energy efficiency than other speakers due to their design.

'Powered towers' are floor standing speakers with a powered subwoofer included. They tend to make best use of available floor space possible by combining the sub woofer in the speaker tower. Usually, floor standing speakers are about 5 feet tall.

When you go through the process of selecting speakers you should compare the different types of speakers that are available first. You can find bookshelf speakers, in-wall speakers and sub woofer/satellite speakers on the market, in addition to Floor Standing Speakers. Each individual type of speaker is designed for possibly different uses.

Bookshelf speakers are extremely common in apartments and condos, where space is at best a premium, at worth cramped. These can be mounted on stands to make your own floor standing speakers or placed on shelves. They provide a fairly standard range of sounds and frequencies and usually cost much less than floor standing speakers.

In-wall speakers are built into your ceiling or walls. These types of speakers a pretty small, some even fitting in the palm of your hand and all wiring is hidden in the walls of your home.  Usually, they are fitted with a plastic grill and mounted flush with the surface of your wall or ceiling.

A subwoofer (a.k.a. sub) and satellite speaker combo is a relatively new configuration, made possible by the recent improvements in speakers and audio receiver technology. Small speakers carry some sounds well, but the subwoofer is necessary to properly translate the deep rumbling bass sounds. This combination is most efficient with a high quality stereo receiver that is able to transmit sounds at the appropriate levels to the correct speakers.

When you are going though your process for choosing floor standing speakers, there are three important features you should consider. Frequency response, cost and power are critical when comparing speakers and value. These details are provided in all speaker spec sheets and are an excellent way to gauge speaker value and ensure you are truly comparing information.

Frequency response is the range of sounds that the speaker is capable of producing. Compare this variable between the possibilities of floor standing speakers that you may be considering. The broader the range, the higher quality sound will be produced by the speaker.

Speaker prices are often, though not always, a reflection of the brand name, but there is also a connection between the price and the quality of sound. Floor standing speakers usually start at about $200 US Dollars each for the basic model. Mid-range floor standing speakers cost approximately $500 USD, and an uber-high quality model can cost as much as $10,000 USD.

Be sure to review the power output of your audio/video receiver or amp before selecting your floor standing speakers. It is no good to have speakers with a higher power rating that the receiver, or vice versa. The amount of power output has a direct impact on the speaker price and can only be enjoyed if you have a stereo receiver that can provide output at the same level.  Basically it would be like outfitting a Chevrolet Corvette with a VW Bug engine.  It may work, but not optimally.
